O’NEAL, AMICK, AND GODSEY VISIT VICTORY LANE

By: Chris Nunn

Brownstown, IN – Brownstown Speedway seemed blessed to dodge the rain that plagued the area on Saturday night, and the fans were treated to a great night of racing in the process. A full program of Bob Poynter Ford Late Models, Right Way Guttering Bombers, and Car Quest UMP Modifieds were on hand for the racing action. Along with our regular program, Mitchell, IN native Arin McIntosh was on hand to show off her Non Winged Sprint Car, in preview of next Saturday’s Non Winged Sprint Car Event, the first in years at the track. A couple of familiar faces visited victory lane, along with one new face. Martinsville, Indiana’s Don O’Neal claimed the Late Model main, Edinburg, Indiana’s Joe Godsey returned to victory lane in the Bomber division, and Bloomington, Indiana’s Greg Amick claimed his first ever UMP Modified feature win.

The 20 lap UMP Modified feature would see Amick and UMP National Points leader Kent Robinson pace the field. Amick led the field around and would lead lap one with Robinson and Jared Bailey battling for second. Robinson then took his mount to the top side and moved back around Bailey for the runner up spot. The yellow flew for the first time on lap three for Devin Gilpin, who spun in turn two. On the restart, Amick led the field to the green flag with Robinson in tow. Behind the lead cars, Todd Gilpin moved around Bailey for the third spot on lap four. Bailey then lost fourth place to Lee Hobbs on lap five coming out of turn two. The car on the move by lap eight was Matt Boknecht, who started 13th on the grid. He got around Bailey for the fifth spot on lap nine. At halfway the top five were Amick, Robinson, Gilpin, Hobbs, and Boknecht. Amick, on lap 14, was enjoying a six car length advantage over Robinson, who had Gilpin right on his back bumper. A battle for fifth started to take shape with just two to go, as Shelby Miles moved around Boknecht. Miles then moved to fourth, as Hobbs would flatten a tire coming to the white flag. Amick, however, was on cruise control as he took the checkers for the first time at Brownstown ahead of Robinson, Gilpin, Miles, and Boknecht rounded out the top five

The 20 Lap Bomber feature would follow the UMP Modified action with Joe Godsey and Bub Cummings leading the field. Godsey darted out to the lead as the green flew, and he would lead lap one with Cummings right behind him. Cummings moved to the high side to challenge for the point as they completed lap two. Godsey would hold off Cummings, as Edgar Godsey moved in to challenge for second. Cummings put some distance between he and Edgar, as Edgar had a battle brewing behind him for fourth. Bubba Woods and Jacoby Hines went door to door for the fourth spot as the field completed lap six. The battle for fourth became a three way dance for third, as they caught Edgar Godsey on lap seven. Contact was made between Godsey and Hines, as all cars continued on. Woods then put his mount under Godsey and grabbed third on lap 10. This left Edgar and Hines to battle for the fourth position. Godsey would hold off Hines to keep the fourth spot. Up front, however, it was all Joe Godsey, as he held a half straight advantage over Cummings with five laps to go. Godsey then coasted to the win over Cummings, Woods, Edgar Godsey, and Hines completed the top five.

Rohn Moon and Justin Blackwell made up the front row for the 25 lap Late Model main. Don O’Neal shot to the high side from his fourth starting position to lead lap one. Blackwell shifted to second with Patrick Sheltra moving to third getting around Moon. O’Neal started to set a torrid pace, stretching his lead to about a half straight on lap six. Behind the leaders, Mike Jewell was trying to get the fifth spot away from Greg Johnson, moving underneath him on lap nine. Johnson could not hold him off, as Jewell went under him for good on lap ten. By this time, O’Neal had begun the lapping process and was a full straight ahead of Blackwell. A battle for third began to take shape on lap thirteen, as Moon moved around Sheltra for the position on the topside. Sheltra motored back under him just a lap later to reclaim the third position. Back to Jewell now, as he was in the midst of fending off Steve Barnett for the fifth position on lap 17. Barnett grabbed the spot on lap 18, putting Jewell back to sixth. Back up front, Sheltra had ran down Blackwell and began putting the heat on him for second. Sheltra then threw a slider on Blackwell on lap 21 to take over the runner up spot. As the field took the white flag, Shannon Reed would loop his mount in turn four, setting up a shootout to the finish. Unfortunately for Sheltra, a lapped car had to be placed between he and the leader O’Neal. A green, white, checkered finish would now be set up on the lap 23 restart. The top five at this point were O’Neal, Sheltra, Blackwell, Moon, and Barnett. When the green flew, O’Neal bolted out to a substantial advantage over Sheltra. After the white flag flew, another caution flew. This time for the spun car of Randey Riggle. On the restart, O’Neal took a three car advantage into turn one. O’Neal sped to the checkers ahead of Sheltra, Blackwell, Moon, and Barnett rounded out the top five.
