The “Night Before the Jackson 100” event at Brownstown Speedway kicked off the 28th Annual Jackson 100 weekend on Friday night. Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN claimed the Late Model feature win from his third starting position. In the Non Winners Feature for drivers that have never won a feature at Brownstown, Brandon Kinzer of Allen, KY took home the checkers. Columbus, IN native Randy Petro took home a hard fought Super Stock feature event.

The 30 lap “Night Before the Jackson 100” feature event started with Brandon Kinzer and Tim Tungate both looking for their first ever feature win at Brownstown. On the start, Don O’Neal shot under the duo of Kinzer and Tungate to snag the lead on lap one. The caution flew on lap three as Bryan Barber looped his mount in turn one. On the restart, O’Neal darted to the bottom of the track and extended his lead on Tungate to about five car lengths. Behind them, Greg Johnson battled with Kinzer for the third spot on lap five. Johnson grabbed the third spot away from Kinzer on lap six. Kinzer then dove back under Johnson on the next circuit to get the spot back. Johnson then took third back on lap eight, just one lap later. By the lap 10 mark, O’Neal had almost a full straightaway lead over Tungate. The man on the move on lap 11 was John Gill who had started 11th and was running fifth by lap 12. Back up front, Johnson began to reel in Tungate for the runner up spot. Johnson moved around him for second on lap 14. Back to Gill, as he moved under Kinzer for the fourth position on lap 16. Kinzer didn’t give up the spot easily, as he moved back around Gill for fourth. Ahead of them, the battle for second was heating up again, as Tungate and Johnson battled door to door for the spot on lap 19. With ten to go, the top five read as O’Neal, Tungate, Johnson, Gill, and Kinzer. Gill then reeled in the second and third place cars of Tungate and Johnson to make it a three way dance for second. Behind them, Matt Miller moved himself into the top five getting around Kinzer. With five to go, O’Neal still had about a full straight lead over the three way battle for second that was going on behind him. On lap 26, Gill, Tungate, and Johnson went three wide for second, with Tungate holding onto second, with Gill moving around Johnson. With one to go, it was all O’Neal finishing ahead of Tungate, Gill, Johnson, and Miller rounding out the top five.

Don Barnett and Randy Petro started on the front row for the 25 lap Super Stock feature event. On the green, Petro jumped out to the lead, and led lap one with Barnett in tow. Behind Barnett, Mike Cawood and Troy Clark battled for the third spot on lap two. Cawood grabbed the spot, and looked to the outside of Barnett for second. The battle for second became a three wide battle between Clark, Cawood, and Barnett on lap five. Cawood won the battle for second, bringing Clark with him to third, and Barnett back to fourth. The caution flew on lap six for Brad Cummings who was spun around in turns one and two. On the restart, Cawood moved under Petro to battle for the lead. Petro held Cawood off as the field completed lap seven. Cawood tried again on lap eight, moving under Petro for the point. Cawood held the advantage on the bottom of the race track, with Petro in the middle. The duo ran door to door for the lead once again on lap 10, with Cawood edging Petro at the line on lap 11. Petro switched lines on lap 12, and took the lead back away from Cawood using the bottom groove. Cawood then had to contend with Clark, who was right on his back bumper. With five laps to go, it was Petro about a half straight ahead of Cawood, Clark, and Jim Ruddick in fourth. Ruddick moved to the high side and shot around both Clark and Cawood for second in one turn on lap 21. With two to go, Ruddick was doing all he could to try to reel Petro in for the lead. As the white flag flew, Petro held off Ruddick at the line for the win.

The Non-Winners feature started with Terry Darkis and Garrett Blackwell on the front row of the 20 lap feature event. Blackwell led the field down the backstretch only to have his lead brought back due to a four car pileup on the backstretch. The field would line back up for a complete restart with no laps complete. The new front row was Blackwell and Zach Carney. This start would also be brought back due to a six car pileup in turn one. A single file restart was now in effect, as the field took the green flag on the start. Blackwell led the field down the backstretch to lead lap one with Jason Smith moving around Scott Jones for second. Victor Lee moved into the third spot on lap three, getting around Jones. Back up front, Smith looked under Blackwell for the lead on lap five. Blackwell held Smith off, but Smith had to contend with Lee for second. Lee then had to hold off Brandon Kinzer. Lee, Kinzer, and Smith went three wide for the second spot on lap eight. Kinzer moved to second, with Lee third, and Patrick Sheltra moving into fourth. At the halfway point, Blackwell led Kinzer, Sheltra, Lee, and Bryan Barber. Up front, Kinzer poked his nose to the outside of Blackwell for the lead on lap 13. Kinzer nabbed the lead away from Blackwell on lap 14, bringing Barber and Sheltra around for second and third moving Blackwell back to fourth. With four to go, Kinzer held a car length advantage over Barber. With the white flag in the air, Barber lost a bit of momentum to Kinzer, as Kinzer picked up the win just ahead of Barber, Sheltra, Greg Kendall, and Lee rounded out the top five.
